What I learned by getting booted off of facebook 3 times? by Stephen T. Jones

About a year ago me and one of my facebook friends (Alex Karis) were chatting on the phone and I told him how I got booted off of facebook 3 times. He had mentioned that this was a great idea for a book and today I decided to write a sub-chapter and it goes a little something like this.

The reason that I am doing this is not to teach people about the social networks I believe it is must deeper than that. I also believe that this is a great opportunity to change the way we do good things in the world. So before we get started let me tell you what I know about facebook and the people that started it. Facebook was created by people from Harvard University which is Ivy league and one thing about the Ivy league is they love rules. If you think about it the status quo that wants to create lots of rules have us to follow all them with little or no change. This is the magic of facebook and this why they can hold so many diverse beliefs, personalities, causes and concerns with little or no conflict. Think about it there are so many conflicting views worldwide and facebook is able to help all these different personalities with little or no conflict. How do they do that? Here is my theory in the book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell he talks about how they cut down large crime in New York City busting people for the smaller crimes. What is a law? It is a rule so facebook is to keep order by creating lots of rules and that we don’t only follow we also sensor other people. Just think 5 year ago you would always hear people talking about censorship and how bad it was and now we are all doing it to each other on facebook and the social networks.

This is a GREAT opportunity

When I was growing up in the 80’s they would say that Russia was the evil empire and most of us just took their word for it and we there was no choice. I believe that because of facebook we are 2 degrees of separation that puts us in a position to have more power in large numbers to do tremendous good without force. This my friends is a gift and a curse and a huge opportunity…on one hand we are making all the right connection and on the other hand facebook is stuck because all of these rules. Let me explain this is the way that I look at it, let’s think of facebook as a large database with lots and lots of people and companies that want to make things happen. Because of all the rules that are constantly changing and all the information that we are taking in we will never be able to make things happen on facebook alone. You are probably saying “Steve, you are confusing me what are you trying to tell me?”

Are you working for facebook or is facebook working for you?

Really ask yourself this question and think about it you can be in one or two groups 1) 95% of the people on facebook are using it as a distraction or are lost and 2) 5% Are making things happen and thinking of ways to leverage it more and more. Think about it this is the wild wild west there are 400 to 500 hundred million people on facebook and people, companies, the media new and old are promoting facebook. How do we get in the top 5 percent? Stop trying to learn all the technology and rule it is impossible and totally in effective. The technology that you are trying to learn in the next year will be replaced 3 to 4 times. What are the solutions? a) Creating ideas visions and then bringing them to life very fast. Than letting the status quo help shape your products or service while turning them into customers. b) Use technology to fight technology. For all the money we are spending to figure this stuff out we could create a facebook application that will create more money and generate leads than our current business model would ever dream of. c) Hiring 20 something’s and telling them your vision and letting them make it happen. This is a challenge this has never been done in history we have only had them fight our wars it is scary but necessary because this stuff is second nature to them. d) Remember facebook is a passive database and without outside connections people will rarely respond. Once someone has met you in person, talked on the with you on phone, subscribe to your blog and/or has attendant one of your events your probability of making something happen has gone up 1000%.
