6 months ago I saw the movie The Hunger Games although this movie was a little exaggerated there are some very good lessons in it. In the movie the Hunger Games is an annual event in which one boy and one girl aged 12–18 from each of the twelve districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle to the death. At one point in the movie I remember that by asking for more food that the food given to you by your government district your name was put into the lottery an additional time. This really strengthened a theory of mine that I discovered how certain religious groups on college campuses would get people to come to their meetings by offering free food.  This experience helped me notice how we can be ruled by blind faith when we are afraid to bit the hand that feed us. If you are like me this might be hard to admit but it is important to see it so we know when we are a victim of the hunger games.

Why do people do this to us?

  • It works…this is not just food it is money and it is base on our fear of survival.
  • They feel entitled because they gave us something better explained in this link. Secret is to limit people doing this to you and you doing this to others. Build something of value that people come to because they want too and the food is just a bonus.

How do we guard against this?

  • Be aware why you are doing things and don’t feel you owe people something because they gave you something free.
  • Be willing to admit what first attracted you to something and make decisions based on you long and short term needs not robbing Peter to pay Paul.
  • Don’t feel you owe people something because you got a free pen and weekend vacation…follow the money. This reminds me of when Kramer was suing Starbucks (VIDEO) and he took their first offer.

Do you see how the hunger games may be effecting your life and the life of others? What is one action you can change right now to become more conscious of your actions?
