Is Starbucks really the evil empire? by Stephen T. Jones w/ Video’s

Lots of people complain that Starbucks is too big and it is putting lots of coffee shops out of business…Are they really the evil empire package in community coffee shops? When people say this I understand where they are coming from but when someone says this it is usually one of my conscious friends that don’t know business. I use to believe this until I realized that I wouldn’t go to coffee shops until they made them more mainstream. The reason that I am writing this is not because I think that I owe Starbucks any favors but I do believe that they are run very well and lots of businessman and women can learn from them.

What can we learn from Starbucks?

  • One of the things reasons that I started looking at Starbucks because they have a brand familiarity with a unique experience. Every 14 days the change the music and the books they sell in there. Each Starbucks is set up slightly different with its unique design I even heard one of the managers ask one of the employees or team members if they wanted to put some of their art up on the wall, which is big for company morale.
  • Starbucks has a great team business model if you look at the people in Starbucks they work well as a team. If you think about it you don’t know who the manager is and only during training will you see that someone doesn’t know what he or she is doing. When you are watching them look closely because the teamwork is generally so seamless that it is hard to follow. Because of this they are have less stress so they are able to remember what regulars order that makes people feel at home. Also if anyone has a conflict all the employees pay attention like they share one mind, it is pretty cool.
  • People think Starbucks is overpriced my friend Tony and I use to joke that Venti meant 5 bucks. The way I look at it now is for 5 bucks you get office space, a chance to meet some good people and good cup of coffee. There are also lots of positive messages placed around and no hidden agendas.
  • Starbucks has very solid marketing and even though they are a large company you rarely come across corporate bureaucracy. Lots of the coffee that they have is helping out villages in Africa and a percentage of the money goes to different causes and it is very low-key without being pushing.
